Church in Knoxville, Iowa. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at

Herbert Arlo Huseman was born April 25, 1931, at home in Varina, Iowa to Carl and
Malinda (Degner) Huseman. Growing up in the small town of Varina, Herb liked to
mention that he was the only boy in his graduating class. The Class of 1949 had three
members. The school wasn’t big enough to have a football team, but he did enjoy
playing basketball. After graduating Herb began working at the Hygrade Packing Plant
until he enlisted in the Navy in 1950. Herb was based out of San Diego and Japan as he
served as Aviation Ordinance 3 rd Class on two different aircraft carriers.
During this time Herb married the love of his life, Anna Braunschweig, on January 25,
1952. The couple first made their home in San Diego while Herb was serving in the Navy.
Upon returning to Storm Lake, he continued his job at the packing plant until 1972.
Herb had been in search of a farm to purchase, and he found a dairy farm in Rice Lake,
Wisconsin. It was a life marked by hard work, long hours, and a deep commitment to
one another.
Herb always had a mechanical interest; he loved tinkering in his workshop and building
different things. Roger remembers building Pinewood Derby Cars with his dad, Roger
wanted them to go fast and Herb wanted them to look great. Herb also enjoyed
woodworking and especially enjoyed fishing in his free time. He also liked playing card
games like pinochle, rummy, and blackjack.
His faith was strong and had been active in his church as an elder and served on many
committees. Herb will be remembered for his even and steady demeanor. Herb’s
greatest joy was his grandchildren and great grandchildren. They really made him smile,
even at the very end.
Herb’s legacy of love, faith, and family will live on through all who knew him. Left to
cherish Herb’s memory are his children: Roger Huseman and Lynda (Kevin) Rice;
grandchildren: Jamie Hamblin, Jennifer (Jason) Hintz, Lacie (Ben) Oakley, Jeff (Sammi)
Huseman, Seth (Grace) Rice, Caleb (Mariah) Rice, Micah (Grace) Rice, Rebekah
(Benjamin) Weadick, Esther Rice, Joseph Rice, Grace (Caleb) McGinnis, and Ruth Rice;
great grandchildren: Daelin Hintz, Kahler Hintz, Brannin Hintz, Jaelyn Jostand, Azure
Hintz, Kinsley Hamblin, Maxwell Oakley, Greyson Oakley, Gideon Rice, Jedidiah Rice,
Leah Rice, Molleigh Rice, Jael Rice, Harriet Rice, Asher Rice, Simeon Rice, Obadiah Rice,
Silas Rice, and Anna Rice; along with many relatives and friends.
He was preceded by his wife Anna in June of 2025; parents; Carl and Malinda; sons:
Kenneth and Paul Huseman; granddaughter, Bethany Huseman; great granddaughter,
Fiona Rice; and siblings: Don Huseman, Grace Bauer, and Helen Prenger.
