David Chelc Showers “Rooster"

January 19, 2026

A celebration of life for David Chelc Showers “Rooster”, 76, of Melcher-Dallas, Iowa, will
be held Tuesday, January 20, 2026, where family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m.
until 7:00 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Melcher-Dallas.
Memorials may be made in care of the family and will be designated at a later date to
one of his passions.
David Chelc Showers was born on December 5, 1949, in Osceola, Iowa, to Chester and
Donnella (Newton) Showers. The family lived on a farm outside of Van Wert before
settling in Leon, where David grew up and graduated from high school. Later, he moved
to Melcher-Dallas with his family, where they purchased and operated Showers Market
in 1973. On April 18, 1970, David married Bonnie Showers. Together, they welcomed
their four children.
David was best known for his many years of service at the Lacona Co-Op, where most
farmers knew him simply as “Rooster.” He began his career there as a mechanic, later
driving the fuel truck, and eventually serving as the petroleum manager. After retiring,
David continued working at Farm & Home in Knoxville for several years. He had a love
for old cars and attending auctions and was especially proud of his 1970’s Super Bee.
A reserved man by nature, David preferred nothing more than being at home with his
family. He loved his children and grandchildren deeply and shared a special bond with
his dog, Boden. He was a sentimental soul, anything given to him, no matter how small,
was carefully kept, even handwritten letters, small gestures meant the world to him. He
also enjoyed collecting die-cast and Hot Wheels cars.
David found joy in woodworking, feeding his squirrels, and fixing just about anything. A
true fix-it man, he handled all of his own home projects and helped his children with
theirs as well. As long as he was around, there were no labor bills to pay, and the cars
always stayed running. Known for his one-liners. Many of which he picked up at the co-
op or borrowed from Smokey and the Bandit, he had a way of bringing laughter to his
kids and those around him.

David will be missed by his wife: Bonnie Showers; children and grandchildren: Chris
(Lisa) Showers, Zach (Allison) Crabtree, Michaela (Michael) Burch, Bailee (Sage)
Brandt, and Shelby (Dylan) Showers; Rebecca (Taha) Showers, Brooklynn Showers

Kendall, Raelyn, and Ellie; siblings: Sue South, and Janie (Mike) Merboth; brother and
