Central sweeps conference honors

PELLA- Central College swept top honors as women's soccer midfielder Piper Eighmy (sophomore, Birmingham, Ala., Briarwood Christian HS) and football receiver Cam Schulte (sophomore, Pella) were named the American Rivers Conference Women's and Men's Athletes of the Week.
Defensive lineman Ethan Thomas (junior, Ankeny) was also cited as the football Special Teams Player of the Week.
Eighmy had four goals on the week, including a hat trick with three goals Saturday in a 6-0 rout of Nebraska Wesleyan University at Pella. She also scored in Central's 5-0 home win over Coe College Wednesday. Eighmy has six goals on the season.
The Dutch are 10-5-2 overall and 3-2-2 in conference play, with their final regular season game Tuesday at Loras College. The six-team conference tournament begins Saturday.
Schulte pulled off a hat trick of sorts as well, with three touchdown catches in Central's 38-21 football victory at the University of Dubuque Saturday. He had six receptions overall for 134 yards. For the year, Schulte has 30 receptions for 427 yards and four scores.
Thomas made a pivotal play in Saturday's win. Dubuque was threatening to cut into Central's 21-7 late second-quarter lead, but Thomas swatted away a 36-yard Spartan field goal try. Three plays later, Schulte hauled in a 74-yard TD reception to give the Dutch at 28-7 halftime cushion.
Central (6-2 overall, 3-1 conference) makes its final home appearance of the season Saturday against Loras College at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium.
