PELLA, IA (10/29/2024) Central College's music program welcomes the public to a host
of concerts and holiday music, including the 50th annual Christmas Candlelight
Concerts.
The Flying Pans Steel Band fall show "Caverns of Steel" will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday,
Nov. 2, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, in Douwstra Auditorium on Hoekstra Family Stage.
Stan Dahl, senior lecturer of music, will direct the performance. Tickets are $10 for
general admission, $8 for seniors and students and free with a Central ID.
The Central Community Orchestra will host their fall concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19,
in Douwstra Auditorium on Hoekstra Family Stage, under the direction of Phil Peters,
orchestra director. Admission is free.
A Cappella Choir, Chamber Singers and College Community Orchestra will perform the
special 50th annual Christmas Candlelight Concerts set for Dec. 5-7 in Des Moines and
on Central's campus. Mark Babcock, a 1991 Central graduate, professor of music and
M. Joan Kuyper Farver Endowed Chair in Music, and Peters will direct this winter
classic. Alumni are welcome to join the choir for the final three closing selections at
each concert. Rehearsals will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 6-7. Please contact
Babcock by Friday, Nov. 29, if you would like to participate.
The first performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at Westminster
Presbyterian Church, located at 4114 Allison Ave. in Des Moines. A pre-concert
reception for alumni begins at 6:45 p.m.
Two Christmas Candlelight Concerts in Pella will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, and
Saturday, Dec. 7, in Douwstra Auditorium on Hoekstra Family Stage. Tickets for adults
are $15; students up to age 12 and senior citizens are $12; and admission is free to
those who present a Central ID.
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Flying Pans Winter Concert
will perform their Winter Serenade at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, in Douwstra Auditorium on
Hoekstra Family Stage. Brad Lampe, lecturer of music, will conduct the Symphonic
Wind Ensemble, while Dahl will direct the Percussion Ensemble and Flying Pans Steel
Band. Tickets will be $5 or a new unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots; admission is free with
a Central ID.
