Structural issue pauses project
The City of Knoxville is providing an update on the Downtown Block Grant project at 302/304 E. Robinson Street following the discovery of structural concerns during construction.
After work began, previously unidentified issues prompted the City to engage a structural engineer to assess the building’s integrity. The evaluation determined that several key structural components are failing, requiring reconstruction of the building’s front façade rather than the originally planned renovation.
Construction at this location will be temporarily paused while project partners redesign the façade to meet both structural and historic preservation standards. The revised plans must be reviewed and approved by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) before work can resume.
“We are committed to ensuring this project is completed safely and in a way that preserves the historic character of our downtown,” said Christopher Watkins, Economic Development Director for the city of Knoxville. “While this pause is not what we anticipated, it is the right step to ensure a quality, long-term outcome.”
Work on the remaining four storefronts included in the Downtown Block Grant project will continue as planned. Christner Construction will complete those sites and return to 302/304 E. Robinson once approvals are received.
The City will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
