Senior Center takes over former VFW home

The Knoxville Senior Center has taken a major step toward securing Its future with the recent purchase of the former Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) property.  The acquisition will give the organization a permanent home and opens the doors for expanded programs and services for area seniors. The purchase follows months of uncertainty after city officials announced plans to relocate municipal offices and eventually sell the current City Hall building where the Senior Center has long operated under a lease agreement. 

Senior Center leaders say the VFW facility and property will provide much needed space for expansion to better serve the growing number of members and community participants. Plans for the building and property include extensive renovations to create a modern, accessible gathering place featuring updated dining, expanded kitchen facilities, improved accessibility, activity areas and spaces for health, wellness, and educational programming.

While renovation work is expected to take place over the coming months, fundraising efforts and volunteer support will play an important role in transforming the building into a welcoming community center for older adults.  The Senior Center plans to remain in its current location until renovations are complete and the renovated facility is ready to open.

The purchase marks an exciting new chapter for the Knoxville Senior Center, ensuring it will continue to provide meals, fellowship, educational opportunities, fitness activities, and social events for Marion County seniors for many years to come.
