Steven Ray McDonald was born January 1, 1952, to Raymond and Clara (Hetherington)
McDonald. The youngest of three boys, he was always close to his brothers. He grew
up just south of Knoxville and attended country school near his home and then
graduated from Knoxville High School in 1970.
In his early career, he worked in Des Moines for Massey Ferguson and then Contech
Steel, before moving to Vermeer where he worked for many years as a welder.
In May of 1982, Steve married Donna, and together they shared more than four
decades of marriage. Family was an important part of Steve's life, and he especially
treasured the relationships he had with his children, grandchildren, and great-
grandchildren. He shared a special bond with the younger generations of his family and
enjoyed being part of their lives.
Steve was a man who enjoyed the simple things. He liked having a beer with friends,
playing cards, and occasionally trying his luck at the casino. He was a jokester who
enjoyed giving people a hard time, usually with a little good-natured teasing. Beneath
that teasing personality was a loyal and trustworthy friend, someone you could count on
when it mattered.
Sports were another favorite pastime. Steve was a devoted Iowa State Cyclones fan
and enjoyed cheering on the Cyclones, especially when they were playing football. He
also loved watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in sports.
Whether cheering from the sidelines or visiting afterward, he took great pleasure in
following their activities and accomplishments.
Steve will be remembered for his sense of humor, his loyalty to those he cared about,
and the many friendships he made throughout his life. Most of all, he will be
remembered as a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved his
family and enjoyed the time they spent together.
Steve is survived by his wife, Donna McDonald; children, Jenny (Jaymie) Moyle and
Kerrie (Matt) Archibald; seven grandchildren: Max Moyle, Collin (Alysa) Moyle, Megan
(Kobe) Moyle, Hollee Archibald, Emma (Zach) Coupples, Keith (Jazmine) Archibald,
and Ericka (Nate) Wynn; and eight great-grandchildren: Alijah, Kaci, Juni, Celeste,
Solstice, Ayla, Miles, and Tucker; along with many relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Raymond “Shorty” and Clara McDonald;
brothers: Denny McDonald and Rocky McDonald; and grandson, Luke Archibald.
